The government is considering establishing tougher VAT regulations for businesses in the sharing economy, including Uber and Airbnb. In a recently published ‘call for evidence’ document the government said that although the sector creates huge opportunities for the UK economy, it is aware that the sharing economy could “potentially create certain challenges to the VAT tax base.”

Google has been fined €100 million by a French regulatory body for putting advertising cookies on users’ computers without consent. The sanctions came as the Commission Nationale de l'informatique et des Libertés (CNIL) fined Amazon €35 million for the same reason.

Plans by tech giants for more encrypted messaging risks greater child exploitation and abuse, the children’s commissioner for England has warned. A report by commissioner Anne Longfield warns that the privacy of direct messaging platforms can conceal some of the most serious crimes against children, including grooming, exploitation, and the sharing of child sexual abuse material.

Following an intervention by international authorities, Apple will now indicate on its App Store what personal data each app uses. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), alongside the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and the Norwegian Consumer Authority, took a lead role in the international effort to improve information available on the use of personal data by applications on Apple’s App Store.

New research shows worldwide losses from cyber-crime now total more than $1 trillion. According to a new report by McAfee and Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), losses from cyber-crime have seen a 50 per cent increase from 2018.

Mark Zuckerberg threatened to pull Facebook’s investment from the UK in a private meeting with Matt Hancock, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has revealed. Minutes from a meeting in May 2018 show that Zuckerberg spoke of an “anti-tech UK government” and joked about making the UK one of two countries he would not visit.

The UK-wide report says that policies must extend beyond the most obvious levers of broadband and digital skills to encompass issues such as digital adoption, data ecosystems, innovation funding, and investment and trade support.

A UK-led space biomining experiment could help the first space settlers gather minerals needed to survive on other planets. The experiment, which was launched on a SpaceX rocket at the weekend, will take up match-box sized containers carrying asteroid rock, which will then be used to grow bacteria and fungi in an incubator for three weeks to investigate how gravity affects interaction between the microbes and rock in reduced gravity.

The government has awarded funding to 21 UK organisations that have “radical ideas” on how to tackle climate change through earth observation. The £7 million funding, provided by the UK Space Agency’s National Space Innovation Programme (NSIP), will also be distributed across businesses and universities addressing satellite communications challenges.

The European Investment Bank Group (EIB) is investing up to €150 million in artificial intelligence businesses to address a European funding gap. The money, which will be invested alongside funding backed by the European Investment Fund (EIF), will be spent on European companies that are active in the AI sector and in technologies that directly compliment AI, such as blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics.
