The government is considering establishing tougher VAT regulations for businesses in the sharing economy, including Uber and Airbnb. In a recently published ‘call for evidence’ document the government said that although the sector creates huge opportunities for the UK economy, it is aware that the sharing economy could “potentially create certain challenges to the VAT tax base.”

A report by commissioner Anne Longfield warns that the privacy of direct messaging platforms can conceal some of the most serious crimes against children, including grooming, exploitation, and the sharing of child sexual abuse material.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), alongside the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and the Norwegian Consumer Authority, took a lead role in the international effort to improve information available on the use of personal data by applications on Apple’s App Store.

Minutes from a meeting in May 2018 show that Zuckerberg spoke of an “anti-tech UK government” and joked about making the UK one of two countries he would not visit.

A UK-led space biomining experiment could help the first space settlers gather minerals needed to survive on other planets. The experiment, which was launched on a SpaceX rocket at the weekend, will take up match-box sized containers carrying asteroid rock, which will then be used to grow bacteria and fungi in an incubator for three weeks to investigate how gravity affects interaction between the microbes and rock in reduced gravity.
