Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform has reportedly been investigated over a potential violation of money laundering statutes related to two payments worth $8 million with suspected Russian ties.
Federal prosecutors in New York, who began investigating the Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG)-owned social media platform last year around its proposed merger with Digital World Acquisition Corporation (DWAC), expanded their enquiries into examining two loans which were wired to TMTG through two “obscure entities” in the Caribbean, according to the Guardian.
Sources told the newspaper the entities both appear to be controlled in part by the relation of an ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
The former US president launched Truth Social in 2022, with the platform claiming to offer a space for "open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology”.
The fresh allegations are liable to throw another spanner in the works around Truth Social’s plans to merge with Digital World and take the social media company public.
Last year, a US federal grand jury subpoenaed board members of DWAC following an investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission that sought to determine if Digital World and Trump Media held proper discussions before the company went public last September.
No such talks were reported in regulatory filings.
