Donald Trump launches social media platform

Former president of the United States Donald Trump has launched a new social media platform.

The app – which is now available to US users on the App Store and Google Play – is described on its website as America’s “Big Tent” social media platform.

The platform, called Truth Social, claims to encourage "open, free, and honest global conversation without discriminating against political ideology”. It is expected to roll out across other regions in the future.

Last year it was reported that the now ex-president sued Facebook, Google (YouTube), and Twitter over claims the sites censored him after he faced a ban on each of the platforms.

Truth Social has been developed by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which was set up only a year ago.

According to Reuters, some registering on Truth Social have been sent a message saying: "Due to massive demand, we have placed you on our waitlist," the Reuters news agency reported."
