Microsoft selects AI startups for COVID-19 recovery programme

Microsoft has chosen 13 startups using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to help UK’s health, manufacturing and resource sectors recover from the impact of COVID-19.

The startups will join Microsoft’s AI for Social Impact 2021 programme, which is co-managed by Social Tech Trust, to develop solutions for organisations across a range of industries to help improve people’s lives, with this year's programme focussed on pandemic recovery.

Among the companies chosen are C the Signs a digital platform that uses AI to identify patients at risk of cancer at a much earlier stage; Fabriq, a software platform designed to make buildings more sustainable; and SafetyNet Technologies, which has created a device that converts fishing boats into scientific vessels, allowing scientists to have a deeper understanding of the oceans, help reduce wastage in the seafood industry and assist climate modelling.

Nadia Laabs, co-founder and chief operating officer at SafetyNet Technologies, said: “The team is delighted to be part of this year Microsoft AI for Social Impact cohort. Joining the programme will help us combine our social and environmental purpose with new data-led solutions to increase understanding of our oceans.”

Clare Barclay, Microsoft UK chief executive, said: “The passion of these entrepreneurs for solving some of the world’s most critical and challenging societal issues is inspiring."

“I look forward to seeing their success and the impact these great businesses will have on healthcare and manufacturing in the UK.”
