Manchester United hit by cyber-attack

Manchester United Football Club announced on Friday that it experienced a cyber-attack on its systems.

The Club said it took swift action to contain the attack and worked with expert advisors to investigate the incident and minimise ongoing IT disruption.

It described the attack as a “sophisticated operation by organised cyber criminals” but reassured fans that its club media channels were unaffected and said no breach of personal data associated with its customers took place.

Earlier this year the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) revealed in its Cyber Threat to Sports Organisations report that the emails of a Premier League club’s managing director had been hacked before a transfer negotiation. The million-pound fee almost fell into the hands of cyber criminals.

In the summer NCSC warned football fans to secure their online platform streaming accounts to avoid facing phishing scams by hackers.
