John Edwards confirmed as new information commissioner

The government has confirmed that John Edwards will become the new information commission from 3 January next year.

In August, the government revealed that it had chosen Edwards as its preferred candidate to head up the UK’s privacy watchdog.

Reports earlier in the year suggested that Edwards, who was previously New Zealand's privacy commissioner, is a critic of Facebook – now Meta – having described the social media giant as “morally bankrupt pathological liars”.

Edwards will be paid £200,000 for the role.
