Shared e-scooter company Bird has announced it will spend $150 million on an expansion across Europe.
European riders already account for nearly half of Bird rides globally, with people on average traveling more than 30 per cent longer on the company’s e-scooters during the pandemic.
“That’s why we’ve put together a bold initiative that will help ensure more people have greater access to micromobility across Europe,” said the company.
The money will be spent on opening micromobility programs across more than 50 new European cities.
The company will also invest in launching new mobility products and safety initiatives, implementing the next generation of recycling and second life applications for vehicles, equity programs, and securing partnerships across the region.
Last week the Bird announced its new Global Ride Pass, which is a suite of new pricing options available in more than 12 countries.
European riders in these regions will now have access to daily unlimited rides passes, monthly unlimited rides passes, monthly unlimited unlocks passes, and three month unlimited unlocks passes.
“Europe is playing a leading role not only in embracing micro-EVs, but in redesigning cities to safely promote their use,” said Travis VanderZanden, founder and chief executive, Bird. “We’re committed to working with cities to advance these incredibly positive initiatives by investing in the technology, as well as the safety, equity and sustainability programs, that will usher in the next generation of clean urban mobility across the continent.”
