Australia has blamed Russian cyber criminals for a sophisticated data hack on health insurance business Medibank.
The hackers have been releasing highly-sensitive and “deeply personal” information from the company's database on a dark web forum, in a move that could impact millions of Australians.
Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner Reece Kershaw said that the agency is working with international networks as part of its investigation, including Interpol, because it believes those responsible for the attack are based in Russia.
”Our intelligence points to a group of loosely affiliated cyber criminals, who are likely responsible for past significant breaches in countries across the world,” said the police commissioner in a statement. “These cyber criminals are operating like a business with affiliates and associates, who are supporting the business.”
The police have announced plans to hold talks with Russian law enforcement about the criminals behind the attack.
As part of its investigation, the Australian police are also looking for anyone that is accessing the personal information on the internet and dark web.
Speaking directly to the parties responsible for the attack, Kershaw said: "We know who you are, and moreover, the AFP has some significant runs on the scoreboard when it comes to bringing overseas offenders back to Australia to face the justice system."
In a Tweet, Medibank said that given the nature of the stolen data it is in the process of contacting customers and urged them to "reach out for support".
