Amazon ‘investigated twice’ in Milan for tax evasion

Amazon is being investigated a second time in Milan for tax evasion, according to Reuters.

A report by the news agency said that an Italian unit of the retailer is currently under investigation by Milan prosecutors as they aim to verify alleged tax evasion practices against the multinational company.

Italian tax authorities and tax police in the city of Monza, near Milan, have been conducting checks on Amazon accounts in Italy in relation to an inquiry started in 2021.

The size of the alleged tax evasion has not yet been disclosed.

Last Tuesday, €121 million in tax evasion was reported from another unit of the e-commerce giant as part of an investigation into alleged tax fraud and illegal labour practices.

The tax fraud charges were led by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office, which believes that the company managed contracts and logistics through cooperatives evading taxes and contributions, while maintaining direct control over unemployed workers.

At the centre of the investigation is Amazon's use of “unauthorised” local couriers, over whom the company allegedly exercised tight control, imposing its own tariffs and violating labour contracts currently in force in Italy.

Although these practices have already been brought against the American giant, no corrective measures have been taken by the company. The authorities investigated three managers and charged the company with administrative liability for corporate offences.

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
