Amazon urged to 'strengthen AI monitoring' by British investor

A UK investor has reportedly urged Amazon to strengthen its monitoring of AI use across the business.

A report by The Sunday Times said that Abrdn had expressed concerns ahead of Amazon’s AGM this week about potential future scandals or oversights relating to the company's AI usage.

The British investment firm currently has a £1 billion stake in the company.

It has also called on Amazon to launch a committee of independent directors to address the impact that AI could have on human rights.

Earlier this month, Amazon announced a 13 per cent sales hike for the first quarter of 2024.

The company said that higher sales were largely driven by its success across AI development and advertising.

Sales jumped from $127.4 billion during the same period of last year to $143.3 billion, while income more than tripled to $10.4 billion.

Amazon boss Andy Jassy said that AI capabilities from Amazon Web Services (AWS) are “reaccelerating” the subsidiary’s growth rate, with the cloud-computing arm anticipating £100 billion in annual revenue.
