Jobs in technology are set to grow over the next five years, according to new research by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
The Future of Jobs Report found that AI and machine learning specialists were at the top of the list of fastest growing technology roles. Demand for sustainability specialists, information security analysts, and system engineers is also set to grow.
Around 85 per cent of the organisations taking part in the research said that technology adoption will drive their business over the next five years. This will create additional jobs in sectors such as robotics and data science.
The research found that more than three quarters of companies are looking to adopt cloud computing and AI into their processes over the next five years. Around 86 per cent of companies will adopt digital platforms and apps.
The WEF said that other jobs, such as clerical roles, will decline as a result of new technology and digitisation. Around 34 per cent of businesses in the research said that tasks were currently automated, which is just a one per cent increase compared to 2020. Just over 40 per cent of businesses believe business processes will be automated by 2027.
The WEF expects that around two million digital commerce roles, including e-commerce and marketing, will be developed over the next five years. The organisation said that these roles will make up for any job losses caused by new technologies.
Commenting on the report Saadia Zahidi, managing director of the World Economic Forum, said : “In 2023, labour-market transformations driven by technological breakthroughs, such as the coming of age of generative artificial intelligence, are being compounded by economic and geopolitical disruptions and growing social and environmental pressures.”
