The UK government has tested AI drones which can detect and track military targets.
The trial, conducted in April, is part of a collaboration with the US and Australia.
The government said that the tests achieved several world firsts including the live retraining of models in flight and the interchange of AI models between the three countries.
The Ministry of Defence says that by sharing AI knowledge with the US and Australia, the government will be able to access the best technology and reduce duplication of effort.
The countries also collaborated to develop machine learning (ML) models, which could be updated to include new targets and changing mission requirements.
Commenting on the news UK deputy chief of defence staff, military capability, lieutenant general Rob Magowan said: “Accelerating technological advances will deliver the operational advantages necessary to defeat current and future threats across the battlespace. We are committed to collaborating with partners to ensure that we achieve this while also promoting the responsible development and deployment of AI.”
