UK and Germany to strengthen science and research ties

The UK government has announced a new agreement to boost science and research ties with Germany.

As part of the deal, the two countries will commit to sharing opportunities across a number of research and development areas, including quantum, AI, and clean technology.

Organisations such as the Royal Society, The Max-Planck Society, and the Helmholtz Association will deepen their research links as part of the plan.

Germany is currently the UK’s second largest research collaborator after the US, with the two countries already involved in several global projects such as CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, and the European Space Agency.

“The United Kingdom with its excellent research and its renowned science institutions, universities and companies is one of Germany’s key partners,” said German federal minister of education and research Bettina Stark-Watzinger. “In the face of current challenges, it is all the more important that we move ahead together and prepare the ground for joint research solutions.”

She added: “Today’s exchange of views together with the science communities in Germany and the UK is only the beginning. Our Joint Declaration of Intent provides the basis for good and close cooperation to strengthen science and research.”
