Medefer raises £10m to expand virtual outpatient services

Medefer has raised a £10 million in a funding round led by Nickleby Capital.

The UK HealthTech startup stated that the new capital will help it scale in order to tackle the potential 10 million patient backlog that has grown due to COVID-19.

Its digital platform connects GPs, consultants and patients. The outpatient operating system manages the entire patient pathway, from referral and triage to investigation, diagnosis and discharge - without the need for physical outpatient appointments - using a nationwide network of contracted remote NHS consultants.

The company claims to provide patients with faster care, as cases are reviewed by NHS consultants in about 10 hours on average, compared to 18 weeks offline. For NHS Trusts, outpatient costs can be cut by up to a third, while waiting lists are reduced by almost three quarters.

Founded by NHS consultants Bahman Nedjat-Shokouhi and Andrew Millar, the startup has helped over 20,000 NHS patients since 2013.
