EE has launched 5G standalone (5GSA) technology in 15 UK cities to improve connectivity.
The company said the technology will provide uninterrupted outdoor coverage allowing customers to make calls and use data in places where it was not possible to do so before.
EE claims that this will offer some of the fastest speeds available on a mobile network, delivering better gaming and video streaming performance.
The 5GSA network will be powered by AI technology, with EE saying that automation will improve reliability, while machine learning will help to reduce energy consumption by putting mobile cells into sleep mode when not in use.
The company says that the network has been designed to ensure that AI applications run smoothly and can connect to the cloud.
EE added that it is exploring how AI technology will enhance the way customers connect in the future.
“5G standalone is a new mobile network giving enhanced performance to customers from day one and unlocks game-changing new services of the future,” said Marc Allera, chief executive of EE. “It’s been built to handle the growing range of AI-powered devices, from smartphones to laptops, tablets and more.”
Additionally, EE has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to launch a new WiFi hub powered by Qualcomm’s networking platforms.
EE said its full fibre customers will be some of the first in the world to experience WIFi7, which is designed to “meet the needs of a connected household” and result in better cloud gaming and 8K video streaming with less interference.
