Boeing and Airbus warn ‘5G could impact aviation safety’

The chief executives of Boeing and Airbus Americas have called for a delay to a planned roll out of 5G in the US.

According to a letter seen by Reuters, Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun and Airbus boss Jeffrey Knittel asked the US transportation secretary to back the postponement of the implementation of AT&T and Verizon’s 5G wireless services, which is due early next year.

"5G interference could adversely affect the ability of aircraft to safely operate," the letter said, as reported by the news agency.

It added that 5G could have "an enormous negative impact on the aviation industry."

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reportedly expressed concern about 5G interfering with aircraft electronics.

Earlier this month, the FAA said that it had issued two airworthiness directives to provide a framework and to gather more information to avoid potential effects on aviation safety equipment.
