Twitter rolling out subtitles option for iOS & Android

Twitter has announced the release of closed caption subtitles for Android and iOS-enables devices.

In a Tweet, the company said that it is currently testing out a new ‘CC’ button to provide users with subtitles generated from transcripts and linked to videos on its platform.

Twitter has previously used Consumer Electronics Association-style captions in a limited capacity, but states that the new option will provide hearing-impaired users with increased accessibility.

Explaining their rationale in a blog announcement, Twitter said: “Subtitles provide context and clarity to video content.

“Publishers on Twitter have long advocated for the ability to provide this context to their audiences through the use of subtitles, particularly in sound-off scenarios.

“Videos in the Twitter timeline autoplay with the sound off, which is why we’re excited to announce the support of .SRT subtitle display on web, iOS, and Android.”
