73 per cent of digital workers expect to switch positions in the next two to three years, according to new research from Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
Four-in-ten of these workers are actively job hunting according to the study, which surveyed approximately 9,900 workers in digital fields from 190 countries.
Key reasons for wanting a job change cited by respondents included better career opportunities in other roles, which was cited by 63 per cent, and looking for a new challenge, which was cited by 43 per cent.
Other reasons provided for looking for new jobs included feeling undervalued in their current role, which was specified by 36 per cent of those surveyed.
Work life balance not matching their standard and looking for a company that is more aligned with their personal beliefs were also popular reasons to search for new roles and were cited by 29 per cent and 24 per cent of those surveyed respectively.
The vast majority - 95 per cent - of the digital workers surveyed want to work remotely at least once a week.
A quarter of digital workers surveyed want to work five days a week remotely, while 13 per cent want to work four days, 29 per cent want to work three days, 22 per cent want to work two days, and six per cent want to work one day.
The research found only five per cent of digital workers want to work five days fully remotely.
Digital workers are also ‘citizens of the world’ according to the research: 68 per cent would work remotely for a company based in a different country, significantly more than the 57 per cent of the cross-job average among those surveyed, and more than the 55 per cent who would move abroad for work.
Digital workers’ first preference would be to work virtually for a company based in the US according to BCG, followed by companies based in the UK and then Australia.
Canada is the new top destination for digital workers who would move abroad for a job according to the research, followed by Australia, Germany, and the UK.
BCG found London remains the top city that digital workers would consider for a transnational job-related move.
Maintaining an equitable work-life balance is the most important factor which digital workers care about, which has remained consistent since BCG first conducted their poll in 2018.
