TfL rolls out rapid alert system for road incidents

Transport for London (TfL) has rolled out new software to upgrade its incident management system.

The public company is responsible for managing 580km of London’s busiest roads, including all 6,400 of its traffic signal junctions.

The new system, implemented by digital transformation firm Sopra Steria, is designed to quickly identify incidents across the company’s vast network to keep traffic moving safely and to provide a single, unified view of the capital’s roads “for the first time”.

The software generates rapid alerts for TfL by analysing large volumes of data on factors like road accidents, traffic congestion and roadworks.

This information is sent to organisations that rely on up-to-date traffic reports, like local authorities and emergency services.

“The transformative system produced from our work with Sopra Steria will enable TfL to manage our surface transport network much more effectively, and gives us a vital tool to keep London moving,” said Irfan Shaffi, operational control manager, TfL. “This project within TfL’s wider Surface Intelligent Transport Systems (SITS) programme, in combination with the other technology tools in development, gives us excellent situational awareness and facilitates the strong green heartbeat needed to deliver upon the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.”
