OVO has announced the acquisition of public EV charging app Bonnet.
The Bristol-based energy supplier said the acquisition underlined its focus on developing new propositions to “help accelerate the green transition and support customers on their journey to zero carbon living”.
Bonnet’s technology consolidates nationwide public charge point operators into one app, which reportedly gives electric vehicle (EV) drivers access to over 27,000 chargers at 7,000 locations.
“Using innovative technology, they’re [Bonnet] connecting EV drivers to the best charging networks available and turning every charge point into an accessible and simple charger that any driver can use,” said Mat Moakes, chief commercial officer at OVO. “By combining Bonnet’s cutting-edge app and OVO’s experience and scale we will encourage more people to adopt electric vehicles and transition to a greener lifestyle.”
OVO’s acquisition follows recent news that its intelligent charging add-on for EV home charging – Charge Anytime – has saved customers more than £3 million since it launched earlier this year.
The news also follows plans by Nissan to invest £2 billion into producing two new electric vehicle models in Sunderland.
Building on a £1 billion electric vehicle hub announced by Nissan and its battery partner AESC in 2021, the latest move aligns with the car maker’s expectation that all its cars sold in Europe will be fully electric by 2030.
