The O2 to adopt Amazon’s ‘Just Walk Out’ tech

Amazon has announced that a store based at the O2 Arena in London will roll out its ‘Just Walk Out’ technology in the summer.

The events venue will be the first indoor arena in England to deploy the technology and one of over a dozen third-party locations in the UK to offer it by the end of the year.

The announcement marks the company’s latest step its strategy to roll out the technology across the UK’s sports stadiums, entertainment venues, airports, hospitals, and universities.

There are already around 140 third-party locations across the US, UK, Canada and Australia using the technology.

In the UK, Just Walk Out is used at Gatwick Airport, the corporate headquarters of Santander Bank, and the ExCel London.

In March, Amazon announced it would more than double the number of third-party stores using its just walk out technology this year.

The move came after Amazon said it was ditching its Just Walk Out tech across all of its Fresh grocery stores in the US.

Last July, Amazon closed three of its Just Walk Out stores in the UK following a review. It still has around 15 stores in the UK using the service.

Amazon claims the store using the technology at ExCel London is now able to serve 300 per cent more customers on its busiest days and has increased annual revenue by 56 per cent since installing the technology.

“Long queues have always been a nuisance, and that’s true all around the world,” said Jon Jenkins, vice president, just walk out technology. “Just walk out technology is looking to solve that problem for shoppers in the UK, which is why this year we’ll more than triple the number of third-party stores in the country, and we’re just getting started.”
