New Facebook brand Meta 'discusses opening retail stores'

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has discussed opening physical retail stores across the world.

The move was first made public by The New York Times, which saw company documents revealing the plans and heard from sources with knowledge of the project.

The social media giant is planning to open stores which will be used to introduce customers to devices made by the business’ Reality Labs division. This would include virtual reality headsets and eventually augmented reality glasses, revealed the sources - which are key to the company's plans to develop the metaverse.

A week ago Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a new branding that aims to reflect the its new focus on developing the metaverse.

The company described the metaverse a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using tech like virtual and augmented reality.

At a Facebook conference, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told attendees that Meta would bring together the social media giant’s apps and technologies under one new brand.

The company said that Meta’s main focus will be to “bring the metaverse to life.”

The company also announced plans to create 10,000 new jobs across the European Union to help develop the metaverse.
