Facebook rebrands to ‘Meta’

Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a new branding that aims to reflect the company’s new focus on developing the metaverse.

At a Facebook conference on Thursday, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg told attendees that Meta would bring together the social media giant’s apps and technologies under one new brand.

The company said that Meta’s main focus will be to “bring the metaverse to life.”

Last week the company announced plans to create 10,000 new jobs across the European Union to help develop the metaverse.

The online platform describes the metaverse as a new phase of interconnected virtual experiences using technologies like virtual and augmented reality.

“The next platform will be even more immersive — an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the metaverse, and it will touch every product we build,” wrote Zuckerberg in a founder’s letter. “In the metaverse, you’ll be able to do almost anything you can imagine — get together with friends and family, work, learn, play, shop, create — as well as completely new experiences that don’t really fit how we think about computers or phones today.”

He added: “In this future, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parents’ living room to catch up. This will open up more opportunity no matter where you live. You’ll be able to spend more time on what matters to you, cut down time in traffic, and reduce your carbon footprint.”

The Meta chief exec said that the metaverse would not just be created by one company but by creators and developers.
