Mitsubishi Motors to invest in Renault's new EV business

Mitsubishi Motors on Tuesday announced plans to invest up to €200 million in Renault’s new electric vehicle (EV) unit.

The Japanese auto manufacturer said that the investment in the Ampere EV and software unit is in line with its mid-term management plan announced in March 2023, where Mitsubishi Motors “committed to the development of electric vehicles and to strengthen cooperation with its Alliance members toward the acceleration phase of electrification”.

A restructured version of this alliance – which is made up of Mitsubishi’s partners Renault and Nissan – was announced in July.

Mitsubishi added that it aims to improve its EV development technology and to expand its line-up of EV, with Ampere to supply an EV on an EOM basis in the European market as the first step of this collaboration.

Speaking at an event in Paris, Renault chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said that he welcomed the investment and that he had always been confident of Mitsubishi’s involvement in Ampere.

Nissan has committed to invest up to €600 million in Ampere, which Renault said it wants to list as a separate entity on the stock market next year.
