Meta & Microsoft join launch of metaverse standards forum

Meta and Microsoft are among the founding members of a new standards forum for the metaverse.

The Metaverse Standards Forum (MSF) also counts technology companies Adobe and NVIDIA among its founding members.

The aim of the forum, which is free for member companies to join, is to foster the development of open standards for the metaverse ecosystem as it continues the integration and deployment of technologies including interactive 3D graphics, VR, and physical simulation.

The MSF said the forum will explore where the lack of interoperability is holding back metaverse deployment and how the work of Standards Developing Organisations (SDOs) defining and evolving needed standards may be coordinated and accelerated.

To meet their aims, the MSF will focus on action-based projects such as implementation prototyping, plugfests, and open-source tooling to accelerate the testing and adoption of metaverse standards.

Consistent terminology and deployment guidelines will also be established.

Hosted by software company the Khronos Group, forum meetings are expected to begin from July.

Neil Trevett, president of Khronos, commented: “The Metaverse Standards Forum is a unique venue for coordination between standards organisations and industry, with a mission to foster the pragmatic and timely standardisation that will be essential to an open and inclusive metaverse.”

Rev Lebaredian, vice president, omniverse & simulation technology at NVIDIA, said: “For the metaverse to be successful and ubiquitous, it must be built on open standards, just like today’s 2D web.

"Our joining the Metaverse Standards Forum will help the community usher in a new era of collaborative and open 3D standards that will form the foundation of the metaverse.”
