Facebook new daily active users grind to a halt

For the first time in its 18-year history, the number of daily active users (DAUs) on Facebook is no longer growing.

The social media giant reported 1.93 billion daily active users in the final months of 2021 – the same figure published for the previous quarter. Several news outlets have said there was actually a marginal decline to 1.929 billion in the fourth quarter.

Monthly active users remained flat at 2.91 billion over the same period.

The company predicts total revenue in the first quarter of this year will be in the range of $27-29 billion – representing 3-11 per cent growth.

It said that it expected growth during the period to be impacted by increased competition and a shift of engagement within its apps towards video-related content like ‘Reels’ – which bring in less money than the site’s feed and stories.

“People have a lot of choices for how they want to spend their time and apps like TikTok are growing very quickly,” said Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. “And this is why our focus on Reels is so important over the long-term.”
