Twitter chief executive Elon Musk is assembling a team to create an AI rival to ChatGPT, according to reports.
The billionaire is in the process of putting together a team of artificial intelligence researchers and engineers, people familiar with the matter told the Financial Times (FT).
The entrepreneur is also courting investors who have previously injected capital into Musk’s other ventures including SpaceX and Tesla, sources told the FT, with one claiming “a bunch of people are investing in it”.
The move comes just weeks after Musk co-signed a letter calling for a pause on AI development.
The letter, published by Musk-funded Future of Life Institute, warned against the risk of economic and political disruptions by “human-competitive” AI systems.
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, philosopher Yuval Noah Harari, and Emma Bluemke, Centre for the Governance of AI, PhD Engineering, University of Oxford, were also among the letter’s signatories.
In service of the new AI project, Musk has reportedly also secured thousands of high-powered GPU processors from Nvidia, which would be a necessity in developing a large language AI model.
The race to gain a leg-up in the AI space is heating up, with the likes of Google, Amazon, and Alibaba having recently launched or announced plans to develop AI systems to rival ChatGPT.
Amazon's new service is designed for building and scaling generative AI platforms and offers a suite of applications in which users are able to generate text, images, audio, and synthetic data in response to prompts.
