Apple pays fine in Russia over in-app payments dominance

Russian authorities on Monday said that Apple has paid a $13.65 million fine over its alleged abuse of its dominant position in the in-app payments market.

The news was announced by Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), which said that Apple paid the fine on 19 January and that the funds had been transferred to Russia’s federal budget.

Apple previously said that it “respectfully disagreed” with the ruling, which said that Apple’s distribution of apps through its iOS operating system gave its own products a competitive advantage.

Apple previously paid a fine of more than $12 million in February 2023 in a separate antitrust case brought by the FAS over abuse of its dominance in the mobile apps market.

The iPhone maker became a target of the Kremlin in the wake of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine when the company paused all product sales in Russia and limited its Apple Pay service.
