AWS to invest $12.7 billion in India

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will invest $12.7 billion into cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

Amazon claims that the investment will add over $23 billion to the GDP of the country and create several thousand jobs locally in areas including engineering and telecommunications.

The investment adds to the $3.7 billion Amazon invested in India between 2016 and 2022, bringing the total amount to $16.4 billion by 2030.

AWS currently has two data centers in India in the Hyderabad and Mumbai regions. Organisations currently using AWS in India include the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Axis Bank.

Commenting on the news Puneet Chandok, president of commercial business, AWS India and South Asia, said: “AWS is committed to driving positive social and economic impact in India.”

He added: “In addition to building cloud infrastructure and helping local customers and partners digitally transform, we have trained more than four million people in India with cloud skills since 2017 and invested in six utility-scale renewable energy projects to meet our global 100 per cent renewable energy goal by 2025.”

Amazon claims that by using AWS, customers in India can meet their sustainability goals by reducing their energy usage and recue their carbon footprint by up to 80 per cent.
