Welsh firm wins €2.5 million grant for diabetes tech

Afon Technology has been awarded funding from the European Innovation Council to improve the lives of people living with diabetes.

The Welsh firm was awarded €2.5 million to fund development of the world’s first non-invasive, real-time continuous blood glucose sensor.

The new technology measures blood glucose levels without needing to penetrate the skin. Afon Technology claims this makes diabetes easier to manage and reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications including strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure.

Commenting on the news Sabih Chaudhry, chief executive at Afon Technology, said: “Afon Technology has the single focus of commercialising a wearable, non-invasive blood glucose monitor to benefit people with diabetes all over the world.”

He added: “Diabetes can be incredibly limiting to someone’s life, but we believe we’ve created a device which will provide the wonderful feeling of freedom all wrapped up in a watch type device on the wrist.”
