Vodafone and Airbus partner on business-critical communication tech

Vodafone Business and Airbus Public Safety and Security, a business unit of Airbus Defence and Space, have entered into a partnership to deliver secure communication technology to critical service providers.

The solution enables multiple users to share messages, live video streams, and location data – enhancing productivity and safety in sectors such as national infrastructure management.

The service connects smartphone users through a secure, collaborative network, allowing real-time video sharing of incidents or the transmission of data to emergency services.

A ‘lifeguard’ feature is included, which automatically sends an alert if a user falls during a hazardous operation or while in a dangerous environment.

Vodafone stated that the service improves situational awareness, helping personnel such as security staff better understand their surroundings.

The technology will be offered as a cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) solution. According to Vodafone, this will allow users to scale the service rapidly across multiple individuals or newly formed sub-groups in response to evolving incidents.

Initially launching in Europe, the technology is planned to be rolled out globally. It is compatible with all standard iOS devices and selected Android smartphones, as well as a range of specially adapted rugged devices.

The solution will also be available via Vodafone’s Mission Critical (MCX) communications service, which is currently being deployed across Europe, beginning with Germany.

“Our role is to connect employees maintaining critical infrastructure such as power stations and airports, ensuring both productivity and public safety,” said Marika Auramo, chief executive of Vodafone Business. “Vodafone’s partnership with Airbus means we can help customers address rising threats, meet growing demand, and manage costs through mission-critical digital connectivity and market-leading software solutions.”
