Ukrtelecom, a national telecoms provider based in Ukraine, has reportedly been hit with a major cyber-attack.
NetBlocks – which tracks network disruptions and shutdowns – said that the disruption was the most severe registered since the invasion by Russia.
Earlier today the organisation revealed that internet connectivity was being restored on the national provider “15 hours after users started falling offline amid a cyber-attack”.
It says the company’s engineers confirmed they have “successfully mitigated” the attack.
In a statement published by the BBC, UKrtelecom chief executive explained that a powerful cyber incident had taken place on in its IT system.
"In order to protect the critical network infrastructure and not interrupt services to the Armed Forces, other military bodies and users of critical infrastructure, we were forced to temporarily restrict internet access to most private users and business customers," added the chief executive.
At the beginning of the month it was reported that Ukraine’s government and military sector had seen a 196 per cent increase in cyber-attacks since the Russian invasion, according to data from Check Point research.
The cybersecurity firm said it had also detected a four per cent increase in attacks directed at Russian organisations.
