UN Security Council to ‘hold talks’ on AI security

The United Nations Security Council is to hold talks on artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time, according to a report by Reuters.

The talks will be held this week in New York and will look at the impact of AI on global peace and security.

The discussion will be chaired by British foreign secretary James Cleverly, as the UK holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month.

The secretary general of the United Nations Antonio Guterres recently said that he supports the idea of an international AI watchdog, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Various other organisations have recently raised concerns about AI or have looked at ways to mitigate possible risks.

Last month, the UK government announced it would hold a global summit to examine the dangers of AI in the autumn, as prime minister Rishi Sunak pushes for the country to become a global leader in AI regulation.

Elsewhere, a group of 13 European consumer groups have called for governments to launch urgent investigations into the risk of generative AI technologies, including ChatGPT. In June, the deputy director general of umbrella consumer group European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) raised “serious concerns” about how these AI systems could “deceive, manipulate and harm people”.
