UK government partners with Stephen Fry to promote UK tech in the US

The UK government has started promoting the country’s technology sector to American entrepreneurs and investors.

The campaign follows research by the government indicating that many of Silicon Valley’s tech entrepreneurs are not aware of the UK’s strengths in artificial intelligence (AI), FinTech and medical technology.

The government said that the UK is the third country in the world to have its tech sector valued at one trillion dollars, and that it has 162 tech unicorns – more than Germany, France and Sweden combined.

GREAT, a long-standing government marketing programme used to attract foreign investment in the UK, has set up billboards in San Francisco and created a short film narrated by British actor Stephen Fry to promote the UK as a “Unicorn Kingdom”.

The campaign is being supported by multiple UK tech unicorns including Darktrace, Deepmind, Revolut, and Matillion.

Commenting on the news technology secretary Michelle Donelan said: “The UK has one of the top tech sectors in the world with a valuation of more than a trillion dollars. It’s diverse, resilient, and continues to grow at a rapid pace with the most venture capital investment in Europe. The goal of this campaign is to attract as much collaboration and investment as we can from Silicon Valley.”
