UK government launches campaign for free tech bootcamps

The UK government has launched a new campaign to draw attention to its free bootcamps, which offer digital skills including cybersecurity, cloud computing and software development.

The government said people possessing these skills can earn salaries exceeding £70,000, over twice the national UK average.

According to new research funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), demand for skilled tech workers surged in 2022 after slumping during the pandemic. While tech job adverts decreased through last year, the government said demand for entry level roles was still high.

It added that demand was particularly strong among scale-up companies who were at the venture stage, accounting for around a third of all digital jobs.

The campaign has been supported by the Digital Skills Council, a group of major technology companies including Google and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

“The appetite and potential British scale-ups have for growth is immense, we can no longer allow digital skills shortages to limit their ambition,” said technology secretary Michelle Donelan. “Whether your personal ambition is to secure a comfy pay packet, land a creative role, solve the world’s most pressing challenges, or all three – the Skills Bootcamps we are promoting today can help achieve your own career goals while being part of our superpower sector.”
