UK airports face huge queues as e-gate system goes down

Over the weekend Heathrow and other UK airports experienced massive queues after a technical issue forced e-gate systems offline.

According to a report by Sky News, crowds of people struggled to pass through customers when the e-gates failed.

As a result, there were huge backlogs of passengers told they could not depart their planes until there was more space inside the terminal.

The news website said that the unspecified technical issue was confirmed to have impacted other airports, including Edinburgh and Manchester.

In a statement to Sky News, Heathrow said the issue impacted Border Force's "e-gates", which are operated by the Home Office, and affected a number of ports of entry.
