Twitter launches crypto tips

Twitter is expanding its tipping feature to everyone and including more payment options – including cryptocurrencies.

The social media platform said that people already drop links to their payment profiles in their bios and Tweets and that ‘Tips’ makes this easier to do.

Twitter users can link to Cash App, Patreon, Venmo, and other payment platforms.

People can also tip with Bitcoin by using Strike – a payments application built on the Bitcoin

Lightning Network that allows people to send and receive the crypto asset.

Strike is only available to people in El Salvador and the US (excluding Hawaii and New York).

When Tips are enabled on a profile, a Bitcoin address can be added and people can copy the address and paste it into a Bitcoin wallet of their choice to send someone a payment directly.

The tech business will roll out the feature to people on iOS first and then later bring the option to Android users over the next few weeks.

Twitter said that it takes no cut from the new payment options.

“We want everyone on Twitter to have access to pathways to get paid,” wrote Twitter staff product manager Esther Crawford in a blog post. “Digital currencies that encourage more people to participate in the economy and help people send each other money across borders and with as little friction as possible – help us get there.”
