Computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence research institute the Hartree Centre has hosted what it describes as a “ground-breaking” ceremony for a new £30 million supercomputer centre.
The Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation (HNCDI) is part of the Hartree Centre’s £172 million collaboration with IBM and will host the latest in new supercomputing, artificial intelligence and quantum technologies to support business and industry.
The new centre is based at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Daresbury Laboratory in Liverpool and will provide businesses of all sizes access to supercomputing technologies that are normally only available to academia and large-scale industry.
The centre will support discovery-led research across sectors including materials, life sciences, environment, and manufacturing.
The Hartree Centre said the new facility would also help to support UK industry’s commitments towards net zero, and work on aims including more efficient manufacturing processes and more energy-efficient logistics for distribution challenges.
Commenting on the new centre, the Kate Royse, TFC’s professor and director of the Hartree Centre, said: “Providing access to technologies, such as AI and quantum computing, enables businesses to increase productivity and achieve success, to the benefit of our economy, both here in the north-west and nationally.”
