Samsung to use Nokia technology in TV sets

Nokia has signed a multi-year patent licence agreement with Samsung for the use of its video technologies in the company’s TV sets.

The agreement provides for the payment of royalties by Samsung to Nokia.

The Finnish company said that it has invested around €150 billion in research and development since 2000, including over €4 billion in 2023 alone) in cutting-edge technologies including cellular and multimedia, as well as over 4,500 patent families focused on 5G.

“We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Samsung covering the use of our video technologies in their world-class TVs,” said Arvin Patel, Nokia’s chief licensing officer. “The agreement is yet another proof point of Nokia’s leadership in video and multimedia technologies, and further validation of our decades-long investments in multimedia R&D and standardisation.”

The move comes after Samsung announced earlier this month the launch of new tech products including TVs, innovative gaming monitors, and a personal assistant robot.

It is also expanding its AI suite of services aimed at boosting users’ experiences at home such as the Samsung Galaxy S, a series of Android-based smartphones, and tablet computers.

The two companies confirmed that the new agreement is separate from the parties’ existing 5G license agreement which was inked in 2023. The multi-year deal allows Samsung to use Nokia's essential 5G technologies in its smartphones and other mobile devices.

The companies had a similar agreement in place since 2016, which expired in 2022.

Jenni Lukander, president of Nokia technologies, said at the time: “The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate, and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies.”
