OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company led by Sam Altman, has signed a landmark deal with media conglomerate News Corp.
The multi-year agreement grants OpenAI access to content from some of News Corp's most prestigious publications, including The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, The Times, and others.
The deal follows OpenAI's recent content licensing agreement with the Financial Times, as the company seeks to enhance its AI models, such as the popular ChatGPT, with access to vast troves of data. Partnerships with news publishers are crucial for training AI models and can provide a lucrative revenue stream for media companies, which have traditionally been denied a share of profits earned by internet giants for distributing their content.
While financial details were not disclosed, The Wall Street Journal reports that the deal could be worth more than $250 million over five years. The agreement also includes a guarantee that the content will not become immediately available on ChatGPT after publication on News Corp's websites.
The move comes as OpenAI continues to forge partnerships with major content providers, having recently secured a deal with social media platform Reddit. Access to high-quality news content is vital for improving the accuracy and depth of responses generated by OpenAI's AI models, such as ChatGPT, which can generate human-like responses and summaries of lengthy texts.
