OpenAI hires new CFO and CPO

OpenAI has hired Sarah Friar as chief financial officer (CFO) and Kevin Weil as chief product officer (CPO).

Friar most recently served as chief executive of social media site Nextdoor, where he worked for around five years.

She has also worked as CFO at software development firm Square. Additionally, she has held roles at Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and Salesforce.

Friar is also a board member of retailer Walmart and software company Consensys.

In her new role at OpenAI, Friar will lead a finance team that provides continued investment in the firm’s research capabilities and ensures that OpenAI can scale to meet the needs of its customer base and operating environment.

Weil most recently held the role of president, product and business at software development firm Planet Labs. Prior to this he was co-founder of the Libra cryptocurrency, VP of product for Novi at Facebook, VP of product at Instagram, and SVP of product at Twitter.

In his new role Weil will lead a product team focused on applying OpenAI’s research to products and services.

Commenting on the news, OpenAI’s chief executive Sam Altman said: “Sarah and Kevin bring a depth of experience that will enable OpenAI to scale our operations, set a strategy for the next phase of growth, and ensure that our teams have the resources they need to continue to thrive.”
