NCSC urges legal firms to step up cyber security

The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) has urged legal firms to improve their cyber security and due to the changing nature of cyber attacks.

In a new report, the NCSC highlights some of the key threats to legal firms and advice on how to protect themselves and the data that they hold.

Potential threats to legal firms include ransomware attacks by criminals and intellectual property theft by state actors.

The NCSC warned that the increase of hybrid working, accelerated during the pandemic, has increased the risks online. As law firms handle sensitive information large sums of money, they can be attractive targets to cyber criminals, it says.

The report builds on similar research issued by the NCSC in 2018.

“The UK legal sector carries out essential work to uphold our society; however, we know the sensitive data legal firms handle can make them attractive targets to online attackers, said NSCS chief executive Lindy Cameron. “I urge all legal practices to follow the guidance in this report and take full advantage of the NCSC’s tools that it recommends to help increase their cyber resilience.”
