Meta to permanently remove Facebook Live videos older than 30 days

Meta has announced that Facebook Live videos older than 30 days will now be automatically removed from the social media platform.

From Wednesday, users will be able to play and download live broadcast videos, share them on their Facebook pages or profiles for 30 days, after which they will be automatically deleted from Facebook.

These videos were previously retained indefinitely but Meta said that because most views occur in the first few weeks of broadcast, it has decided to update the retention duration of live broadcasts.

The deletion process will happen in waves over the coming months, with users notified of the deletion process via email and in the app. They will have 90 days to download or transfer the content.

“We are launching new tools to make downloading your previous live videos easier,” the company said, adding users will be able to download old videos to their device and transfer them to their cloud storage.

Meta is also offering an option to keep users' old videos on their pages for more than 30 days by cutting out shorter moments from their live videos and sharing them as clips on Facebook.

The tech giant said it will offer the option to defer deletion for another six months.

The option is not automatically configured and must be confirmed by clicking “learn more” and “defer deletion.”

After that period, if users don’t confirm a choice, old live videos will be permanently removed.
