Meta tests ‘not interested’ control on Instagram

Instagram-owner Meta has announced it is testing new controls that will allow users to block posts they are not interested in on the platform.

The company said it was piloting a feature that will let Instagram users mark multiple posts in its Explore section as ‘not interested’.

These posts will then be “immediately hidden” and the platform will then stop showing similar content in the future.

Instagram also plans to test a new control that will enable users to block suggested posts with certain words, phrases, or emojis in the caption or hashtags.

The social media giant said that while it has always had rules about what kind of content can be on Instagram – for example hate speech and bullying are banned – users may still see “content that doesn’t break the rules but could be upsetting to some”.

“It’s important to us that people feel good about the time they spend on Instagram, so we’ll continue to work on ways to give people more control over what they see,” said the company in an announcement.
