Major outage knocks high-profile websites offline

A major outage impacted much of the internet on Tuesday, temporarily pushing high-profile websites like Amazon, Reddit, and PayPal offline.

Other websites including gov.uk, BBC.com, Shopify, HBO Max, Vimeo, Hulu, CNN, the Financial Times, the Guardian, and the New York Times were also impacted by the shut down.

The issue began at about 11am BST and lasted for an hour.

American cloud computing company Fastly took responsibility for the outage.

“We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration,” it said on Twitter.

In the afternoon, Fastly announced that its global network was “coming back online.”

According to the company’s website, the global CDN disruption impacted countries all over the world.

Fastly is an edge cloud platform, which aims to speed up loading times on websites and helps protect them from denial-of-service attacks. This kind of platform is also designed to aid websites when traffic is particularly high.
