MWC 2023: Next tech era will see ‘mastery over atoms and molecules’ says Matter director

Zina Jarrahi Cinker, director general at smart tech software developer Matter and chief creator at Puzzle X, took to the Banco Sabadell stage at this year’s MWC to outline her views on frontier tech and what the next tech era beyond silicon may be.

Matter is a long-awaited smart home standard which was launched in late 2022. The company behind the tech, also named Matter, aims to improve smart home interoperability and break down the walled gardens which have to date stunted innovation in the space.

Speaking at MWC, the company's director general spoke about the possibilities of smart tech in the medical field and discussed how 'frontier tech' can influence development in the coming years.

“With the help of nanotechnology, quantum computing, and graphene nanoribbons, the next chapter in human technological development will be in our mastery over atoms and molecules,” Cinker said.

She predicts the next tech evolution resulting in “everything being a sensory experience”.

Cinker shared that the likes of graphene nanoribbons have been used to enable a rat with a severed spine to regain motor control and believes that it will be essential for this and other fledgling areas of frontier tech to come together for the benefit of fields including MedTech, manufacturing, biology and our understanding of the human brain.

“The symbiosis of different technologies will be essential on humankind’s next technological leap forward,” she concluded.

Bleeding-edge technology is being developed for the medical field by a number of major companies, but it is not without controversy. Elon Musk-backed Neuralink has faced a litany of investigations over its animal welfare and hygiene practices, while doctors at the at the University of Pennsylvania have warned that brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) like Neuralink can cause strange cognitive changes including feelings of estrangement.
