Huawei to launch Saudi cloud data centre

Chinese tech giant Huawei has announced plans to open a cloud data centre in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, as it looks to push further into the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

The data centre will serve government services for the kingdom and allow for AI applications and language models in Arabic. It marks Huawei’s 30th cloud data centre worldwide, with Huawei ranking fifth in the global cloud services market.

Steven Yi, Huawei’s regional president for MENA, said that the move would contribute to the development of Saudi Arabia’s digital economy, stating: "The implementation of Huawei cloud is not just about us, but is a bridge that will bring other Chinese companies to Saudi Arabia.”

Huawei opened its regional headquarters in Riyadh earlier this year, after announcing plans to invest $400 million in the Saudi Arabia cloud region over the next five years.

The Saudi government previously stated that it would not sign contracts with foreign companies that do not have regional headquarters in the country from 2024 onwards.
