Government spends £1bn on cloud transition

The government is set to spend more than £1 billion annually on transitioning to the cloud, according to new data.

Figures obtained by the Telegraph showed that public sector bodies and government departments are expected to spend as much as £1.3 billion on cloud services in the year to April.

Around £1.1 billion was spent on cloud hosting, software and support in the year ending April 2018, up from the £421 million that was spent in 2014-2015.

The highest spending departments on cloud technology were the Department for Work and Pensions and the Home Office as they embark on wide-ranging projects to migrate services to the cloud.
