Google launches fund for Taiwan's media industry

Google has announced a new initiative to support the “digital prosperity and future” of Taiwan’s media industry.

In collaboration with the Digital Transformation Association (DTA) and the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MDA), the Taiwan News Digital Co-prosperity Fund will help Taiwanese publishers build a digital foundation, expand their reach and improve audience engagement, Google said.

The creation of the fund follows Google consultations with publishers and policymakers in Taiwan, which found there was a desire from publishers on the island to hone digital skills, gain expertise, and support the news industry’s sustainable development.

Along with partners the MDA and DTA, Google said its funding will run over the course of three years and be accompanied by ongoing training on digital skills through the Google News Initiative.

Google acknowledged the guidance of the Taipei Newspaper Business Association, the Taipei Magazine Business Association, the Satellite Radio and Television Business Association and the Television Society for bringing the project to fruition, and said that “together, we are committed to advancing our shared goals”.
