Google has begun to roll out biometric passkeys in a move it claims will make the process of signing into apps and websites easier and more secure for customers.
Passkeys work by using a fingerprint or a face scan to unlock devices, apps and websites.
Google said passkeys, which it said will make way for a “passwordless future, are resistant to phishing scams and are more secure than two-step verification (2SV) which require passcodes to be sent by SMS.
The passkey launch forms part of a collaboration between FIDO Alliance, Apple and Microsoft.
Users will still be able to access their accounts and devices using passwords and 2SV while the change over takes place.
Some websites, such as Shopify, PayPal and Kayak have already begun to offer the new system to their users.
The move follows the news that chief executives at Google and Microsoft were recently summoned to a meeting at the White House to discuss the concerns about artificial intelligence and large language models such as ChatGPT.
